The president of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, recently made a significant visit to Touba ahead of the Grand Magal pilgrimage. The trip was part of a customary courtesy call to the general khalife of the Mouride brotherhood, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, accompanied by a prominent delegation including lawmakers and key figures from Pastef.
During the meeting, Sonko took the opportunity to honor the memory and contributions of Serigne Touba, the revered founder of the Mouride order. « Our joy and respect for Serigne Touba are boundless, » he stated, emphasizing the enduring impact of his teachings and life journey. « His example serves as an inspiration for anyone aspiring to lead a nation. His vision embodies patriotism and sovereignty—true freedom requires independence, » Sonko remarked, reflecting themes central to his political movement.
Sonko also highlighted a pivotal moment in the history of the Grand Mosque of Touba. « A close associate recently shared that Serigne Touba had requested each disciple contribute just 140 francs to fund the mosque’s construction. He rejected an offer from colonial authorities to build it themselves, » Sonko recounted. « The journey from a humble beginning to the thriving city Touba is today speaks volumes. Had we followed Serigne Touba’s principles, we would not be burdened by today’s debt crisis, » he added, subtly critiquing public financial management.
Concluding his address, Sonko invoked the wisdom of Serigne Cheikh Gaindé Fatma: « Assess what each person can contribute, and invest transparently so that all are aware. » This statement encapsulates his vision for governance rooted in civic responsibility and accountability.
The visit mirrors a similar gesture made days earlier by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was also received by the khalife in preparation for the Grand Magal. In response, Serigne Mountakha expressed his approval, urging Sonko to continue his efforts in fostering national peace and unity.
