Sonelgaz initiates 40 MW power plant construction in Chad’s capital
An Algerian delegation from the Sonelgaz group has arrived in N’Djamena to launch preparatory work for a new 40 megawatt (MW) power plant in Chad. This initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision to strengthen South-South cooperation, particularly with Chad, following the official visit by Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria from April 22 to 24.
The delegation, led by Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz International, was received by officials from Tchad-Elec (the Chadian electricity company) in a meeting that included Algeria’s ambassador to Chad and representatives from Chad’s Ministry of Energy. High-level discussions continued with key Chadian figures including Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning and International Cooperation, and Passalé Kanabé Marcelin, Minister of Water and Energy.
The meetings underscored the strategic importance of this project in enhancing economic and energy cooperation between Algeria and Chad. The delegation engaged in technical and regulatory discussions with Tchad-Elec representatives, focusing on:
- Establishing a common roadmap for project execution
- Forming joint working teams for effective coordination
- Conducting site inspections to assess infrastructure readiness
- Evaluating grid connection possibilities
- Ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory standards
These preparatory steps will ensure the project meets the highest quality and efficiency standards before construction begins. The initiative reflects the shared commitment of both nations to build a sustainable energy partnership and demonstrates Sonelgaz’s dedication to supporting African partners through knowledge transfer, technical capacity building, and tailored solutions that address the continent’s energy development needs.
Next steps in the 40 MW power plant project
The Algerian delegation will conduct comprehensive site studies to:
- Assess existing infrastructure at the proposed location
- Analyze compatibility with the existing power grid
- Verify adherence to current technical and regulatory requirements
Following these evaluations, the teams will finalize project specifications and initiate construction activities, marking a significant milestone in Algeria-Chad energy collaboration.
