Senegal prime minister transition: Sonko’s warning to new PM Al Aminou Lo

Senegal’s leadership handover: Sonko sends cautionary message to successor

Transition ceremony between outgoing and incoming Senegalese Prime Ministers

The handover ceremony at Senegal’s Prime Minister’s office became a platform for outgoing leader Ousmane Sonko to share crucial advice with his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô. Their exchange highlighted both personal respect and institutional continuity as the new administration prepares to take the helm.

Friday marked the official transition of power at the Senegalese Prime Minister’s office between Ousmane Sonko, who stepped down, and Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, who now leads the government.

During the handover ceremony, both leaders exchanged words of mutual appreciation while reflecting on their collaborative work in national governance. The new Prime Minister took the opportunity to recount his professional journey with Sonko, stating: “In April 2024, he reached out to me. We were strangers at the time. I came on board and he placed his trust in me.” This marked the beginning of their joint efforts in implementing the National Transformation Agenda.

Lô went on to describe his expanded role within the executive branch: “The authorities decided to bring me into the fold, and the President of the Republic called upon me to contribute to the National Transformation Agenda under his leadership. The results speak for themselves.” He emphasized his appointment as a bridge between the Prime Minister’s office and the Presidency, a role Sonko himself encouraged during their handover.

The departing Prime Minister maintained an open-door policy for his successor, according to Lô’s account: “Whenever I needed to consult with him or provide updates, he received me with genuine warmth.” The new leader described the transition as both a personal and institutional milestone, expressing gratitude: “It’s an honor to take over from someone who has given so much to this Senegalese state and supported me generously.”

Lô also revealed a candid conversation with Sonko, who warned him about the challenges ahead: “He gave me a heads-up just last Tuesday, telling me it’s going to be extremely tough.” Despite the difficulties, the new Prime Minister committed to continuing institutional cooperation and seeking Sonko’s guidance when needed: “I will continue to benefit from his wise counsel and seek his advice whenever necessary.”
