« When we reached Mopti, we were housed in a school. Plenty of supplies were provided, » recounts a displaced resident of Kouakourou with gratitude, « including rice, tea, sugar, oil, and powdered milk. The aid comes from an anonymous donor, while the local authorities manage the distributions. »
« Yet living in a school is far from ideal, » he laments. « Some sleep outside in the courtyard. When it rains, everyone crams into classrooms. It’s unbearable. Food isn’t lacking, but this isn’t living. Over 400 of us are squeezed into the school. »
Today, Kouakourou village stands empty. After jihadist group Jnim issued its ultimatum, residents had no choice but to flee. « Being forced to abandon your home and everything you own is devastating, » shares another displaced villager. « All we want is to return home. Some left with only the clothes on their backs. The attackers even took our phones. Worse, we were in the middle of preparing for the farming season when this tragedy struck. We’ll have to forgo this year’s harvest, and that’s heartbreaking. »
