Olympique Lyonnais requests postponement of Toulouse match before Champions League playoff
BREAKING. Olympique Lyonnais has formally asked the Ligue de Football Professionnel to postpone its opening Ligue 1 match against Toulouse, scheduled for August 22, to better prepare for potential UEFA Champions League playoff fixtures.
Olympique Lyonnais resumed training on June 29 with the primary objective of being fully prepared for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, set for August 4 or 5 (first leg) and August 11 (second leg). Should the team advance, Olympique Lyonnais, managed by Paulo Fonseca, would face the playoff stage in the following fortnight.
In anticipation of this scenario, Olympique Lyonnais submitted a formal request to the LFP to postpone its Ligue 1 opener against Toulouse, which is slated for August 22. The request was contingent on the team qualifying for the Champions League playoffs and was framed within the broader interests of French football, drawing parallels with similar concessions granted to Paris Saint-Germain last season.
However, the LFP’s governing board, which convened via videoconference on Monday, rejected the proposal in a vote. One of the key arguments against the postponement was the impracticality of leaving a gap in the first matchday schedule, especially given that Ligue 1+ will now broadcast all fixtures.
