In Tan-Tan, a groundbreaking military cooperation initiative between Morocco and the United States is taking shape. Known as the Advanced Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC), this strategic hub will be structured around three core components: a Multidomain Training Area (MDTA), a Drone Training Academy (MTDA), and an Innovation and Experimentation Center.
The primary goal is to fast-track the modernization of military capabilities by integrating cutting-edge technologies and enhancing interoperability among African and Western partners. According to insiders closely following the project, the center aims to bridge critical gaps in defense cooperation across the region.
Morocco’s strategic assets fuel rapid development
General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR), highlighted the Kingdom’s readiness to turn this vision into operational reality. “Morocco’s existing infrastructure and highly skilled workforce provide a solid foundation for swift deployment of this initiative,” he stated. He also emphasized the country’s potential as a reliable industrial partner for the United States in advancing defense technologies.
Three pillars driving innovation and efficiency
The MDTA will serve as an advanced training ground, preparing forces to operate in complex scenarios, including across the full electromagnetic spectrum. Meanwhile, the MTDA will focus on training African operators in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations in West Africa.
The Innovation and Experimentation Center will function as a rapid-prototyping lab for emerging technologies. Priority will be given to artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications, with a focus on cost-effective, scalable solutions tailored to Africa’s operational realities.
Beyond defense: economic and technological spillovers
This initiative is not confined to military advancements. It also promises significant economic and technological benefits by involving industrial and academic stakeholders. The AMTEC could foster an innovation ecosystem around defense technologies, serving as a testing ground for next-generation wireless and detection systems while supporting development in remote regions.
A model for future exercises
African Lion 2027, one of the continent’s largest annual military exercises hosted in Morocco, is set to serve as the first real-world validation of AMTEC’s capabilities. Over the years, African Lion has evolved into a natural testing ground for integrating advanced technologies in real operational conditions.
