The military leadership in Mali has undergone a significant restructuring following the coordinated attacks on April 25, 2026, which were claimed by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA). These assaults resulted in the tragic loss of former Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara.
An extraordinary edition of the Journal Officiel dated May 29 confirmed the appointment of several high-ranking officers to pivotal positions within the Malian Armed Forces and the unified force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
New leadership for regional security efforts
Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra, previously Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, now leads the AES unified force. His deep operational expertise in the eastern regions played a decisive role in his selection. He replaces Brigadier General Daouda Traoré, whose tenure concluded with the recent security challenges.
To fill the critical role of Chief of Staff, the government appointed Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, transitioning from his position as a strategic advisor. Meanwhile, Colonel-Major Yacouba Sanogo has been designated as the strategic advisor to the Chief of Staff, ensuring continuity in high-level decision-making.
Operational command shifts across key zones
The restructuring extends to frontline leadership, with Colonel-Major Karim Traoré assuming command of the Eastern Operational Zone. Colonel-Major Didier Dembélé now oversees the Southern Zone, while Colonel Issa Bagayoko heads the Central Zone. These changes aim to enhance responsiveness and effectiveness in countering insurgent threats.
President of the Transitional Government, General Assimi Goïta, has personally taken charge of the Defense portfolio. Additionally, General Oumar Diarra has been appointed as the Minister Delegate for Defense, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing the escalating security crisis.
These strategic adjustments reflect Bamako’s determination to bolster defensive capabilities and streamline coordination between national military operations and those conducted under the AES framework. The reshuffle underscores a proactive approach to restoring stability in a volatile regional landscape.
