Human rights challenges in Niger following the 2023 coup d’état

This submission serves as a preparation for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR) concerning Niger, which is slated for April-May 2026. It provides a detailed assessment of the country’s progress regarding earlier mandates, particularly highlighting issues surrounding unjustified detentions, illegal arrests, the safety of human rights defenders, and the current state of journalism.

Additionally, the report investigates the national human rights infrastructure as it relates to the fundamental rights of expression and the freedom of the press in Niger since the political transitions of 2023.
