Côte d’Ivoire celebrates women’s impact during independence anniversary week

In Abidjan’s Yopougon district, the Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization launched the inaugural edition of the National Week of Celebrating Women Builders of the Nation. Set for August 1 to 4, 2026, the event coincides with the 66th anniversary of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence.

Under the theme “66 years of Ivorian independence: what gains for women and what future prospects?”, the initiative highlights the vital contributions of women to the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress. It also serves as a platform to assess ongoing challenges and chart a path forward.

The FIP president, Rebecca Yao, emphasized that the week will provide an opportunity to evaluate achievements since independence, address persistent issues, and recommend actionable policies. “We recognized the need to pause and assess women’s progress, identify remaining barriers, and propose solutions,” she stated.

The agenda, running from August 1 to 3 at Yopougon’s city hall, includes a national symposium with an opening panel and 16 thematic sessions. Topics will span women’s leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth, and gender rights. An exhibition will showcase trailblazing women’s journeys alongside successful female-led projects and entrepreneurship programs.

Concluding discussions will culminate in a white paper submitted to relevant authorities for implementation. The highlight of the event will be the August 4 gala dinner at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 pioneering women will be honored for their lifelong dedication to nation-building since 1960.

Rebecca Yao revealed plans to make this an annual tradition. “Before introducing new ideas, we will revisit resolutions from each edition to track progress and ensure accountability,” she noted.

The Yopougon parliamentarian Mireille Bamba praised the initiative, reaffirming the support of Deputy-Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers aim to establish this week as a yearly forum for reflection, dialogue, and recognition of women’s indispensable role in shaping Côte d’Ivoire’s future.
