Tensions had been brewing for months between Paris and Ouagadougou. On June 26, Burkina Faso made its move, breaking off diplomatic relations with its former colonial ruler, France, with immediate effect. The French government has been given one week to shut down its embassy. The announcement came via a statement read on national television and radio.
