All eyes are currently fixed on the American continent, where the 2026 World Cup is unfolding. Among those keenly observing is Medhi Benatia, fresh from a tumultuous period at Olympique de Marseille, where he had hoped to secure a promising young international talent.

It was a story filled with potential. Having been developed in Marseille’s youth system without ever playing professionally for the club, Medhi Benatia returned in 2023 with aspirations of building an ambitious project. However, his tenure as sporting director proved brief, concluding just months after the departures of Roberto De Zerbi and Pablo Longoria, following a truly challenging season for OM.
Benatia’s post-OM involvement
Yet, Benatia’s connection to the club might not be entirely severed. Reports suggest that Benatia continues to contribute to OM behind the scenes, particularly concerning a major ongoing transfer saga. This undoubtedly refers to the potential move of Mason Greenwood, who is reportedly on the verge of joining AS Roma as the summer transfer window commences. While an agreement is said to be in place between the player and the Italian side, the crucial step of finalizing terms between the two clubs remains. This negotiation appears complex, with Marseille reportedly seeking between €50M and €55M to release the English winger.
“I tried to bring him to Marseille, but he was too expensive”
Meanwhile, Medhi Benatia keeps a watchful eye on the 2026 World Cup, where a player he once sought for OM is currently competing. This individual is Neil El Aynaoui, the Moroccan international who previously played for Nancy and RC Lens, and is now with AS Roma. “He is a very robust player because he combines quality and quantity,” the former Marseille figure explained in an interview. “I didn’t understand why he played less at Roma than I anticipated. I had attempted to bring him to Marseille, but his cost proved prohibitive.”
