WAPCO Niger’s ‘healthy communities’ initiative boosts public well-being

In a significant stride towards enhancing public well-being, WAPCO (Niger), in close collaboration with the local livestock department, recently concluded a highly successful cattle vaccination and deworming campaign within the Zinder region. This crucial initiative extended its reach to seven pastoral encampments, including notable areas like N’Guel Eléfi and Tesker, providing essential services to more than 10,000 animals. This achievement marks the successful completion of the initial phase of WAPCO (Niger)’s ‘Healthy Communities’ public interest activities, which have now positively impacted all regions situated along the pipeline route.

To further bolster the health management capabilities of the local populace, WAPCO (Niger) proactively integrated its internal medical resources. Leveraging on-site medical personnel and essential medicines, the company launched two pilot projects for free community medical consultations near pumping stations 5 and 6 in early 2025. These initiatives garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from residents. Building on this successful pilot, the program expanded its scope with a comprehensive needs assessment, officially inaugurating the first phase of the ‘Healthy Communities’ program in August 2025. To date, WAPCO (Niger) has facilitated a total of seven free community medical consultations, delivering vital healthcare services to 1,249 local residents, and has generously donated a tricycle ambulance to a local community health center.

During the implementation of these complimentary medical consultations, the company’s team identified that livestock represents a fundamental source of income and livelihood for local families, and that herders face an urgent need for animal care. Responding directly to these community concerns, WAPCO (Niger) broadened the scope of its ‘Healthy Communities’ endeavors. Partnering with local livestock authorities and other relevant entities, WAPCO (Niger) has since provided vaccination and deworming services to over 20,000 animals across three major pastoral gathering points along the pipeline, thereby assisting herders in safeguarding their critical productive assets.

As a committed and responsible enterprise, WAPCO (Niger) has upheld a foundational philosophy of mutual benefit and shared development since its inception. While diligently ensuring the secure and stable operation of the pipeline, the company places paramount importance on fulfilling its social responsibilities. WAPCO (Niger) consistently champions the Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP), contributes through public interest donations, and provides essential aid to communities. These efforts actively contribute to the enhancement of local livelihoods and foster social progress, continuously strengthening the population’s ‘sense of gain’ and cultivating a supportive external environment conducive to secure pipeline operations.

Looking ahead, WAPCO (Niger) is dedicated to deepening its community needs assessments to precisely address the expectations of riparian populations. The company will steadily broaden the scope of its public interest activities, ensuring that more residents can partake in the benefits of development. While guaranteeing the safe and efficient functioning of this vital energy artery, WAPCO (Niger) pledges to consistently collaborate with the community, implementing tangible measures to advance livelihood improvements and foster mutual growth and shared development between WAPCO (Niger) and the communities it serves.
