Senegal political tensions as Sonko rejects new government participation

At a press briefing in Dakar on June 2, former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko addressed the media regarding his party’s decision to decline participation in the newly formed government, announced the previous day by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye‘s administration under Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô.
The refusal stems from deep-seated disagreements over policy priorities and ministerial portfolio allocations, Sonko explained. Key issues include judicial reforms, financial accountability, and renegotiating strategic national contracts—all central to his party’s agenda. He claimed the president provided no concrete commitments during discussions, particularly on debt management strategies.
