Senegal hosts 85th african parliamentary union session under sonko’s leadership

Dakar is preparing to host a major continental event as the Senegalese capital becomes the stage for the 85th Executive Committee Meeting of the African Parliamentary Union. Scheduled for June 3–4, 2026, this gathering will bring together over 100 lawmakers from nearly 16 African nations.

With less than a day remaining before delegates arrive, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, shared a forward-looking message to his counterparts across the continent. He emphasized the critical role this session must play in advancing the pan-African vision that has shaped generations of leaders before them.

In his official address, Sonko underscored the urgent need for stronger parliamentary cooperation at a time when Africa faces unprecedented challenges. “At a moment when our continent must address profound challenges, deepening parliamentary collaboration has never been more essential,” he stated. “I am convinced that Africa’s future will be forged by Africans themselves—rooted in our shared values, aspirations, and interests. This is why I hope our deliberations will contribute meaningfully to the realization of the pan-African ideal inherited from those who came before us.”

This high-profile event marks a significant milestone for Sonko, who was overwhelmingly elected to lead Senegal’s National Assembly on May 26, 2026, securing 99.25% of the vote (132 out of 133 ballots cast). As host and presiding officer, his leadership will guide discussions aimed at reinforcing unity and strategic action across Africa’s legislative bodies.

The upcoming session reflects a collective commitment among African parliamentarians to strengthen continental governance through dialogue, shared policy frameworks, and coordinated responses to regional priorities.
