Breaking News from Dakar
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the president of Senegal, is set to launch his own political party, a move that cements his break with former ally Ousmane Sonko and his former camp, Pastef.
Aminata Touré, the president’s chief advisor, has been tasked with setting up a working group to create the new party.
Diomaye Faye was a member of Pastef, the ruling party led by Sonko, who recently lost his job as prime minister after months of tension between the two former partners.
Political Turmoil in Senegal
The developments come at a time when Senegal is struggling to cope with a financial crisis triggered by the revelation of an undisclosed debt from the previous government.
With both leaders gearing up for local elections scheduled for 2027, which will gauge their popularity across the country, the rift between them appears now to be irreversible.
