Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph triggers nationwide chaos
France’s Interior Ministry has reported 780 arrests nationwide following Paris Saint-Germain’s dramatic Champions League victory over Arsenal. This figure represents a 32% spike in disturbances compared to last year’s celebrations when PSG claimed their first European crown.
The celebrations began immediately after the final whistle in Istanbul, where 48,000 PSG supporters packed the Parc des Princes to witness their team’s triumph. Fireworks and unrelenting chants of « Champions d’Europe » and « Ici c’est Paris » erupted throughout the stadium as the club secured their second consecutive Champions League title.
Security crisis: massive deployment, still heavy toll
French authorities had mobilized a unprecedented security force of 22,000 police and gendarmerie officers, including 8,000 dedicated to maintaining order in Paris and its surrounding areas. Despite these precautions, the night descended into violence, leaving 219 injured, including eight with life-threatening wounds. Among the casualties were 57 law enforcement officers, one of whom remains in critical condition after being attacked in Agen.
Tragedy and violence mark chaotic celebrations
As celebrations turned to chaos, a motorcyclist lost his life in a horrifying accident just after 1:10 AM. Witnesses reported the rider striking a one-meter-high concrete barrier on the Porte Maillot slip road, which had been deliberately placed to prevent vehicle access. The 24-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries at 2:20 AM, and authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
In Paris’s 16th arrondissement, a knife attack left a 17-year-old fighting for his life after sustaining severe injuries to his eye and mouth. The assailants fled the scene, leaving the victim in critical condition and prompting immediate hospitalization.
Nationwide unrest extends beyond Paris
Violence wasn’t confined to the capital. In Grenoble, Dijon, and Besançon, rioters targeted commercial areas, leaving behind significant property damage. Local authorities reported multiple incidents, including arson and looting, as crowds took to the streets to celebrate — and sometimes exploit — the historic moment.
The Interior Minister confirmed that 780 individuals were taken into custody across France during the night’s disturbances. In Paris, 150 people attempted to breach stadium security but were swiftly repelled by law enforcement.
Massive public gathering planned for Champs-Élysées
As the Tour Eiffel illuminated the Parisian sky to celebrate the victory, authorities anticipate nearly 100,000 fans gathering on the Champs-Élysées the following afternoon. The team’s victory procession will continue to the Élysée Palace and the Parc des Princes in the evening, where celebrations are expected to continue well into the night.
