Ousmane Sonko rallies supporters in Bargny, Sébikotane, Khombole and Bambey for Pastef membership drive

In a vibrant display of grassroots support, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, launched a whirlwind tour across four key localities in Sénégal—Bargny, Sébikotane, Khombole, and Bambey. The high-energy campaign, which kicked off with a massive turnout in Bargny, marks the first leg of a nationwide push to expand the party’s membership base.

Addressing a sea of enthusiastic supporters, Sonko paid tribute to fallen activists who lost their lives during the turbulent years of political struggle that preceded the party’s historic rise to power. He celebrated their sacrifices and praised the unwavering dedication of Bargny’s grassroots patriots in securing the party’s victory.

The Pastef party’s triumph—first in the April 2024 presidential election, followed by a landslide victory in the subsequent legislative polls—was framed as the culmination of a decade-long mobilization effort. This period was marred by relentless repression and tragic losses between 2021 and 2024, a testament to the resilience of its members.

Since assuming the role of National Assembly President on May 22, Sonko’s relationship with the President of Sénégal has steadily deteriorated. The timing of this tour coincides with the launch of the head of state’s own political party, signaling a definitive split within the once-united Diomaye Président coalition. Recent weeks have seen a wave of resignations from Pastef cadres, further underscoring the growing rift.

The Bargny stopover was not merely a campaign event but a continuation of Sonko’s ongoing tribute to activists and victims from the 2021–2024 era. Earlier this year, he announced a 100 million FCFA fund to support these individuals and their families, reaffirming his commitment to their cause.

The membership card sales initiative, which began in early July, has already gained remarkable momentum. In Mbacké, the campaign’s official launch drew an overwhelming response, with 13,000 cards sold in just a few hours. The demand was so high that the party had to place an urgent reorder in Dakar. Sonko has set an ambitious target: recruiting one million members before October.
