When questioned about a potential run for the 2029 presidential election, Ousmane Sonko, the influential leader of Pastef, maintained a cautious posture.
The President of the National Assembly asserted that any discussion of a candidacy at this juncture is “highly premature.” He acknowledged the various initiatives advocating for his participation in the 2029 polls but stressed the importance of proper timing. “I believe it is essential to await the appropriate moment,” he stated, adding, “My political party will ultimately determine and endorse the candidate it wishes to put forward. We are simply not there yet.”
Regarding President Diomaye Faye’s own potential re-election bid in 2029, Sonko made it clear that he does not involve himself in the current president’s electoral considerations. “I am convinced he has his own trajectory to follow, just as I have mine,” he affirmed, choosing not to elaborate on the incumbent head of state’s future political aspirations.
