The Olympique Lyonnais (OL) has taken a strategic step to bolster their bid for a UEFA Champions League qualification by requesting a postponement of their opening Ligue 1 fixture. The club has formally communicated this request to the French Football League (LFP), targeting the away game against Toulouse scheduled for August 22.
This request is conditional: the postponement would only apply if the Rhône-based side progresses through the Champions League playoffs. The timing of the Toulouse match would otherwise conflict with a potential two-legged playoff clash, a critical phase in their European campaign.
European ambitions drive tactical decision
Preparations for the third qualifying round of the Champions League have already begun, with training resuming on June 29. The initial playoff leg is set for August 4 or 5, followed by the return match on August 11. In the event of success, the playoffs would follow shortly after, creating a dense schedule that demands peak physical and tactical readiness.
The OL has framed their request around «the superior interest of French football», a justification previously employed by Paris Saint-Germain under comparable circumstances. The LFP is now tasked with evaluating this appeal in the coming days, with the outcome poised to influence the club’s readiness for a potential European double-header.
