• Maresca targets reunion with Argentine star.

As the post-Guardiola era approaches at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City has identified Enzo Fernández as a primary transfer target. This ambitious move is understood to be heavily influenced by Enzo Maresca, who is poised to succeed Guardiola on a three-year contract this summer.

The Italian tactician, who developed a strong working relationship with the World Cup winner during their 18 months together at Stamford Bridge, firmly believes that the Argentine’s skill set is ideal for energizing his prospective midfield. The Premier League champions have already initiated preliminary discussions to assess the viability of such a significant acquisition.

• Fernández’s growing discontent at Chelsea.

The long-term future of Enzo Fernández at Chelsea has been a subject of intense speculation. His dissatisfaction reportedly escalated following the club’s exit from the Champions League. Relations with the Chelsea hierarchy further strained when the midfielder received a two-match internal suspension after publicly discussing a potential move to Real Madrid during an international break.

The Argentine has consistently expressed his admiration for Enzo Maresca and openly questioned Chelsea’s decision to part ways with the coach mid-season. »

• Tactical shift expected at the Etihad.

Manchester City is reportedly seeking a marquee signing to usher in the Enzo Maresca era. Enzo Fernández’s renowned ability to dictate play from deep in midfield aligns seamlessly with the club’s anticipated new tactical direction. Despite his £106.8 million transfer to Chelsea, the Argentine midfielder has yet to consistently impress for the Blues, partly due to frequent squad rotation.

With Chelsea missing out on Champions League football next season, the prospect of joining a club with Manchester City’s illustrious trophy cabinet could prove irresistible for Fernández. As the Premier League season concludes this Sunday with Chelsea visiting Sunderland, unable to climb higher than seventh place, the uncertainty surrounding their key players, including Fernández, only intensifies.

• Crafting the summer shortlist.

While Enzo Fernández remains the frontrunner, Manchester City’s recruitment department is exploring multiple avenues. Our intelligence suggests the Citizens are also closely monitoring Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Tino Livramento of Newcastle, aiming to inject youth into both their defensive and midfield ranks. Maresca’s intimate knowledge of Chelsea’s squad could also lead to further targets emerging from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea is expected to demand a transfer fee similar to the substantial sum paid to Benfica in 2023, setting the stage for potentially intricate negotiations. Despite these anticipated hurdles, Maresca is reportedly determined to secure his priority signing, and the Manchester City board is poised to offer full support in their quest to reclaim the Premier League title from Arsenal next season.
