After intense negotiations, Toulouse FC and Sunderland have reached a definitive agreement for the transfer of young left-back Dayann Methalie to the Premier League. The 20-year-old international is set to undergo a medical in England within hours.

French football is set to lose another promising talent. After weeks of deliberations, Toulouse FC and Sunderland have confirmed a complete accord for the transfer of Dayann Methalie during the summer transfer window. The deal sees the left-back leave Ligue 1 for the Premier League.

Initially resistant to an initial bid around €33 million for the young defender, Toulouse eventually accepted a revised offer of approximately €30 million, including performance bonuses. A restructuring of the bonus structure and a higher fixed fee ultimately convinced the club’s leadership to finalise the deal.

The 20-year-old international has already reached a five-year agreement with Sunderland, as confirmed in late July. A product of Toulouse’s youth academy, Methalie has established himself as a key player for the Violets, earning four caps for France’s Under-21 side.

A rising star in French football

After a standout 2025-26 season, Methalie has firmly established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most exciting young defenders. He made 30 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and two assists. His performances caught the attention of several European clubs, but the promising project at Sunderland, spearheaded by manager Régis Le Bris, ultimately swayed his decision.

With a transfer fee of around €30 million, Toulouse secures another substantial financial boost following the departure of Brazilian defender Emerson to Ipswich Town for nearly €32 million. Methalie’s exit marks another significant transfer in what has been a busy summer for Ligue 1.
