Malombo bridge access roads near completion in Nyong-et-Kellé

As of June 29, 2026, the construction of access roads to the bridge over the Nyong River in Malombo, Nyong-et-Kellé department, is in its final stage. Crews from the contractor CFHEC have completed the pavement work and have now moved on to installing road signs and drainage systems.

The access roads, stretching 960 meters across both banks, feature a cross-section of 1×2 lanes, each 3.5 meters wide, with 1.5-meter shoulders on either side. The pavement structure consists of a 25 cm lateritic gravel foundation layer, a 20 cm crushed gravel base layer (0/31.5), and a 5 cm bituminous concrete wearing course. Meanwhile, the main bridge structure over the Nyong River is also in the finishing phase.

Officials from the Ministry of Public Works are confident that the Malombo bridge will be delivered ahead of the contractual deadline—approximately eight months early. By June 11, the river had already receded to allow the 160-meter-long structure to take shape, with only signage pending. The prefabricated steel-concrete composite girders, installed months ago, now stand ready to carry traffic. The access road works are progressing in tandem.

CFHEC is now focusing on final touches to prepare for project handover. The supervising team, a joint venture between INTEGC and GENERAL ENGINEERING, oversees quality control. The Ministry of Public Works, as the project owner, has provided close monitoring and support since construction began, ensuring steady progress despite numerous challenges.

The execution was far from smooth. Disputes over the location of the base camp, difficulties in acclimatizing personnel, repeated fuel theft from tankers (both day and night), occasional hostility from local residents, thefts at the construction base, pending payment claims, torrential rains, and rising river levels all tested the contractor’s resolve. Yet none of these obstacles prevented CFHEC from honoring its commitment—delivering the bridge ahead of schedule, as instructed by the project owner.
