Mali military regains control in key conflict zones

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a decisive shift in momentum, asserting full operational control across multiple frontlines where clashes with armed factions have intensified. This development follows coordinated attacks by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in northern regions and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group, operating in central and southern Mali.

In a formal statement, the FAMA confirmed sustained engagements on Sunday near Anifif, located approximately 110 kilometers southeast of Kidal. The area has become a focal point after reports indicated the arrival of additional fighters and logistical support for the MNLA, prompting a robust counteroffensive by government forces.

The military announcement emphasized the resilience of its troops, stating: « These recent pressures have only strengthened our resolve. Our units engaged the enemy throughout the day with unwavering discipline and strategic precision, reaffirming our commitment to restoring security and territorial integrity. »

The FAMA reiterated its confidence in the nation’s defense capabilities, vowing to safeguard civilian populations and dismantle hostile forces threatening Mali’s sovereignty. Officials also dismissed claims of leadership losses within the MNLA, with spokesperson Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan denying reports of the death of MNLA leader Mbarek Ag Akli. « Our commander remains actively engaged in directing operations on the ground, » Ramadan asserted.

The military’s statement concludes a period of heightened violence, signaling a potential turning point in the conflict as government forces consolidate their position against insurgent groups.
