Senegalese citizen files complaint against political leader over alleged defamatory statements
A legal complaint has been lodged with the Dakar Prosecutor’s Office following controversial remarks attributed to Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, regarding Touba, Senegal’s revered holy city. The filing, submitted by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—a citizen, entrepreneur, and descendant of the city’s founder—seeks judicial intervention to address what he describes as serious reputational damage.
In a formal petition dated July 14, 2026, the complainant argues that Sonko’s public statements—allegedly claiming that “dirty money entered Touba”—undermine the moral integrity of the city, which was founded on principles of faith, integrity, justice, and diligence under Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba’s legacy. The petition calls for immediate investigative measures, including a formal hearing of Sonko to clarify his remarks and provide supporting evidence.
The complaint also requests thorough verification of the allegations, with potential charges including defamation, dissemination of false information, or other offenses under Senegalese law. The complainant claims to possess substantiating materials, such as video recordings, transcripts, and media reports documenting the disputed statements.
This legal maneuver adds another layer to the ongoing political and social tensions surrounding Sonko’s declarations. The outcome hinges on the prosecutor’s decision to proceed with formal inquiries, which could escalate into a broader judicial dispute.
