Gabon to produce military uniforms locally to boost defense autonomy

Gabon is taking a decisive step toward reinforcing its defense capabilities by establishing a local uniform production facility for its armed forces. The initiative, championed by the Ministry of National Defense under the leadership of Minister Brigitte Onkanowa, aims to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on foreign suppliers for military attire.

Lawmakers from the Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, National Defense, and Regional Integration Committee recently reviewed the draft legislation, which proposes creating a dedicated industrial workshop. This move aligns with a broader strategy to enhance the operational independence of Gabon’s defense and security forces by securing a stable and self-sufficient supply chain.

During parliamentary discussions, concerns were raised about the project’s feasibility, particularly regarding quality standards and financial oversight. Deputy Jean Gaspard Ntoutoume Ayi emphasized the need for uniforms produced locally to meet or exceed the durability and standards of imported ones. He also highlighted the potential for job creation and the promotion of national craftsmanship. Meanwhile, Deputy Jean François Ndongou raised questions about budgetary discipline, seeking assurances that the project would avoid cost overruns.

In response, Brigitte Onkanowa reassured legislators that the workshop would serve as a centralized support unit for all deployed military units across Gabon. She underscored that the facility would streamline procurement processes while ensuring stricter financial accountability for military clothing expenditures. With lawmakers convinced of the initiative’s long-term benefits for sovereignty and cost efficiency, the bill was forwarded to a specialized commission for finalization, paving the way for swift adoption.
