France severs ties with Burkina Faso and withdraws diplomatic staff

In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic tensions, France has severed all ties with Burkina Faso and ordered the immediate withdrawal of its entire diplomatic personnel from the West African nation. The decision follows Ouagadougou’s unilateral announcement on June 26 to cut diplomatic relations with Paris, marking the latest chapter in a deteriorating relationship between the two countries.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Burkinabè chargé d’affaires in Paris on June 30 to formalize the response. In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, French authorities demanded that all Burkinabè diplomatic staff leave France within seven days. This move underscores the gravity of the situation and the determination of both governments to take decisive action.

The rupture in relations did not emerge overnight. Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed leadership following the September 2022 coup, Burkina Faso has adopted an increasingly assertive stance toward Western powers, particularly France. Ouagadougou has repeatedly accused Paris of undermining its sovereignty and supporting terrorist groups—a claim France has vehemently denied as “completely false.”

In a stern statement, the French ministry emphasized its unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in the Sahel region and condemned all acts of violence against civilians. Meanwhile, Paris has advised its citizens in Burkina Faso to exercise extreme caution, as the security environment remains volatile. Current estimates indicate over 2,000 French nationals reside in Burkina Faso, while approximately 6,000 Burkinabè citizens live in France.

The breakdown of relations has unfolded over the past two years. In 2023, Burkina Faso expelled the French ambassador, terminated its military cooperation agreement with France, and ended the presence of French forces that had been battling jihadist groups. Since then, Ouagadougou has pivoted toward new alliances, deepening partnerships with nations such as Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
