Africa CDC director general Jean Kaseya said he held a “constructive” discussion with French health minister Stéphanie Rist following the confirmation of an imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease on French soil.
Kaseya welcomed France’s assurance that no travel restrictions would be imposed in connection with this case.
The patient, a Congolese humanitarian doctor who had been involved in the Ebola response in Ituri for the NGO ALIMA, tested positive after arriving in France, where he normally resides, according to a statement from the French embassy in Kinshasa issued on 25 June. This is the first confirmed case on French territory.
Kaseya stated that Africa CDC, the World Health Organization, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, as well as French and Congolese authorities, remain fully committed to containing the outbreak, protecting communities, and advancing a coordinated response at the continental and global levels.
