AES Russia alliance deepens strategic ties in Niamey talks

West African bloc and Russia expand joint diplomatic and security initiatives

The diplomatic landscape of the Sahel is taking a new shape as Niamey, Niger’s capital, hosted the second round of high-level talks between foreign affairs representatives of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia’s top diplomat. The July 8 gathering brought together Niger’s foreign minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, and Russia’s Sergei Lavrov, marking another step in their growing partnership.

During the session, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent exchanges between the AES and Russia, noting significant achievements across both security cooperation and economic development. These efforts, he explained, are built on shared diplomatic priorities that strengthen regional stability while fostering trade and investment.

The meeting also placed strong emphasis on counter-terrorism, with ministers calling for enhanced military collaboration to bolster the operational readiness of the AES Joint Force. In parallel, they underscored the importance of economic integration, particularly through the implementation of the AES Second-Year Roadmap, which aims to accelerate regional development and prosperity.

Addressing the gathering, Russia’s Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s unwavering commitment to a mutually beneficial partnership with the AES. He emphasized Russia’s readiness to support both the security and socioeconomic advancement of the confederation’s member states, reinforcing a vision of sustainable progress for local communities.

The April 2025 inaugural consultation in Moscow laid the groundwork for this ongoing dialogue, which aligns with Lavrov’s current African diplomatic tour. The Niamey talks signal a clear intent to solidify cooperation in the coming months, with both sides expressing optimism about future collaboration.
