AES and Russia deepen strategic ties in Niamey talks

Niamey, Niger hosted the second round of high-level diplomatic consultations on July 8 between foreign ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia. The gathering marked a significant step in strengthening collaborative frameworks between the two sides.

Joining Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov were his counterparts from the AES member states: Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré. The meeting yielded concrete outcomes across multiple domains of cooperation.

Mali’s foreign minister Diop highlighted the “fruitful and regular exchanges” between AES countries and Russia, noting substantial progress in both defense partnerships and economic initiatives. “Our shared diplomatic vision has unlocked tangible benefits,” he stated, emphasizing the integration of military cooperation with sustainable development goals.

Countering regional threats

Discussions on counterterrorism focused on enhancing operational capabilities of the AES Joint Force. Ministers agreed on the urgency of scaling up military coordination while simultaneously advancing economic integration through the Confederation’s Year II roadmap.

Russia’s commitment to Sahel stability

Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to deepening mutually beneficial ties with the AES bloc. “Our partnership is rooted in solidarity,” he declared, pledging continued support for both security operations and sustainable development initiatives across the region.

This diplomatic engagement follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow during April 2025, part of Lavrov’s recent African diplomatic circuit.
