Washington backs Morocco’s territorial integrity in historic message to King Mohammed VI

During the 27th anniversary of the Moroccan Throne Day festivities on July 30, King Mohammed VI received a formal message from United States President Donald Trump. In the communication, the White House unequivocally restated America’s recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over the Western Sahara region and endorsed Rabat’s autonomy proposal as the sole viable path toward resolving the prolonged territorial dispute.

«The United States stands firm: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and fully support the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the only credible, realistic foundation for a fair and lasting solution,» President Trump declared in the official correspondence.

He further emphasized that «any alternative approach merely perpetuates the status quo, which is unacceptable.» The American leader stressed the urgency of concluding this decades-old conflict, affirming that the United States would continue driving diplomatic and political efforts to achieve a resolution.

Strengthening a century-old alliance

In his congratulatory message to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, President Trump highlighted two and a half centuries of uninterrupted friendship between the two nations. He described the bilateral relationship as «a bond forged in mutual trust and deep respect.»

The U.S. president praised King Mohammed VI’s visionary leadership, calling him a «cornerstone of regional stability» and commending Morocco’s unwavering dedication to regional security, counterterrorism efforts, and the protection of shared interests. Trump specifically referenced Morocco’s pivotal role in the Abraham Accords, underscoring its value as a strategic partner for the United States. He also pledged strengthened collaboration to enhance security across the Sahel region.

Expanding economic horizons

On the economic front, President Trump instructed U.S. officials to accelerate joint initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable development in Morocco, including initiatives within Western Sahara. He identified key sectors poised for growth, including technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense—all areas where bilateral cooperation is expected to flourish.
