Sonko insists on holding local elections in January 2027 despite pressures

The political landscape in Senegal is facing a critical moment as legislator and PASTEF leader Ousmane Sonko firmly rejects any proposal to postpone the upcoming local elections scheduled for January 2027. In a clear and uncompromising statement, he emphasized that delaying these elections would be an unacceptable betrayal of the democratic process.

Elections must proceed as scheduled, says Sonko

Ousmane Sonko delivered a strong message to those questioning the feasibility of the January 2027 local elections. He recalled the sacrifices made to prevent a previous postponement, stating that three lives were lost in the struggle to uphold electoral integrity. « The people of Senegal have already paid a heavy price to ensure that elections are not delayed. We cannot allow any maneuvers to push back the vote,» he declared.

He drew a clear distinction between the 2024 legislative elections, which were held out of necessity following the dissolution of the National Assembly, and the upcoming local elections, which are part of the constitutional electoral calendar. « These elections are not optional; they are a legal obligation. When the time comes, the people will cast their ballots,» he insisted.

Electoral preparations must not be delayed

Sonko warned against any attempts to stall the electoral process, highlighting that voter registration should already be underway. « The authorities must act now. We fought hard to prevent delays, and some paid with their lives. We will not accept any excuses for postponing these elections,» he added.

He also expressed confidence in his party’s electoral strength, pointing to the ongoing sale of voter cards as a strong indicator of PASTEF’s support. « The numbers speak for themselves. The sale of voter cards is a clear sign of our momentum. We are on track for a strong performance,» he concluded.
