Ousmane Sonko has been relieved of his duties as Prime Minister and head of government of Senegal by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The announcement was made during a broadcast on national television. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially declared the dismissal of Ousmane Sonko from his high-ranking position.

The decision marks the end of a strained relationship between the two leaders, who had previously collaborated closely.

The dismissal also means the entire government cabinet, including ministers and state secretaries, will step down from their roles.

The news prompted an immediate reaction from Ousmane Sonko on his social media platforms. He posted, “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence.”

The removal of Ousmane Sonko from the prime ministerial post also triggers the dissolution of the government of the Republic.

The Presidency has announced that a new Prime Minister will be appointed, and a fresh government will be formed under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

It was Ousmane Sonko who inspired and supported Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s presidential candidacy in 2024. Initially ineligible to run, Ousmane Sonko endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who went on to win the election in a single round with over 54% of the vote.
