Senegal's Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo challenges Ousmane Sonko's political motives

Tensions escalate as Senegal’s Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo responds sharply to Ousmane Sonko’s recent statements in Touba, where the opposition leader accused the government of prioritizing foreign interests over national sovereignty.

The political rivalry between Senegal’s Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo and opposition figure Ousmane Sonko has intensified following a high-profile press conference in Touba. Sonko, who previously served as Prime Minister, criticized the government’s economic policies and vowed to push for multiple no-confidence votes in the National Assembly. Al Aminou Lo swiftly countered by addressing these claims directly on social media platform X.

While avoiding a direct mention of Ousmane Sonko, the Prime Minister’s post was widely seen as a rebuttal to the opposition leader’s allegations. “Claiming exclusive ownership of patriotism is, in itself, an act of betrayal,” Al Aminou Lo stated. His remarks came in response to Sonko’s claims that the government was secretly prioritizing foreign investor demands over domestic economic interests.

Sonko had alleged during the Pastef party’s headquarters inauguration in Touba that Al Aminou Lo had privately expressed intentions to focus on improving the business climate to meet Western investor expectations. “This suggests a deliberate attempt to undermine the very policies we stand for,” Sonko declared. He subsequently announced plans to introduce a series of no-confidence motions against the government, framing his actions as a necessary check on its policies.
