National Assembly Roiled by Intense Clash Over Financial Safeguards

The National Assembly witnessed a sharp confrontation during a heated session led by deputy Abdou Mbow, who delivered a stark warning about the nation’s fiscal stability. Speaking from the podium, he painted a grim picture of mismanagement, declaring that the country faces a systemic crisis threatening its economic foundation.

Mbow’s address zeroed in on allegations of financial irregularities within key institutions, including Customs and the Directorate of Financial Administration (DAF). He went further to allege that high-profile figures had diverted funds originally allocated for the Casamance region for partisan motives, calling into question the integrity of public finance oversight.

The deputy’s comments—delivered without substantiation—prompted an immediate response from Assembly President Ousmane Sonko, who repeatedly instructed him to adhere to the session’s agenda. Despite these interruptions, Mbow pressed on, invoking a past debate where another lawmaker, Guy Marius Sagna, had similarly strayed from the topic.

Sonko, however, remained firm, demanding that Mbow confine his remarks to the scheduled discussion. The deputy countered that Sagna had faced no consequences for exceeding boundaries, reinforcing his argument that the nation’s financial security was at stake. “We must recognize, without ambiguity, that this country is in peril,” he asserted.

The tension escalated as Sonko issued a stern warning: “Stick to the topic or relinquish the podium.” He underscored his point, adding, “I do not wish to see you leave the same way as last time,” a reference to a prior incident involving Mbow in the chamber. Undeterred, the deputy continued his critique, emphasizing the gravity of public fund misappropriation. “Public money cannot be diverted, then hidden behind parliamentary immunity. The consequences will follow,” he concluded.
