Warren Zaïre-Emery, a standout performer this season for Paris Saint-Germain, found himself left out of the starting lineup in last weekend’s dramatic UEFA Champions League final triumph over Arsenal. The 20-year-old, who has been a key contributor throughout the campaign, watched from the bench as Achraf Hakimi and Fabian Ruiz occupied his usual midfield positions.
Despite the accolades for PSG’s second consecutive Champions League victory, questions linger over Zaïre-Emery’s role in the team’s future. His exclusion from the final lineup—despite his consistent performances—has sparked discussions about his long-term prospects at the club.
Young star may seek new challenges
Football analyst Pierre Maturana suggested that players like Zaïre-Emery, though delivering strong seasons, may reconsider their futures if regular first-team football isn’t guaranteed. « A high-calibre player like Warren Zaïre-Emery, who has excelled this season, knows that even if all eleven starters are available, he may not start. He played only because others were unavailable. These young talents might conclude that leaving could be the best path to secure regular playing time », Maturana noted. « Today, he could walk into any top European side as a starter. The situation at PSG might push him to explore other options ».
PSG coach admits injustice
PSG manager Luis Enrique, speaking at the post-match press conference, acknowledged the harsh reality facing Zaïre-Emery. He admitted, « We must celebrate this victory—it’s a dream come true. But I must first address the unfairness Warren has faced as his coach. He has shown immense character, yet it was unjust to keep him out of the starting eleven. That said, he entered the game brilliantly. The match was tough, especially against a technically and physically dominant Arsenal side that defended deep. We improved in the second half, but facing such a team is always challenging. Still, achieving back-to-back Champions League titles is extraordinary. We’re proud and ready to celebrate ».
The French international’s future at Parc des Princes now hangs in the balance, with speculation rife about his next move.
