The Stade du Ray was the stage for an intense opening-day duel as OGC Nice welcomed FC Lorient in Ligue 1. However, both teams left the pitch with nothing to show for their efforts following a tightly contested 0-0 draw.
Nice’s mission to reassert themselves
With a 16th-place finish from the previous season still fresh in the memory, the Aiglons were eager to prove they belonged in France’s top flight. Under the guidance of head coach Olivier Pantaloni, who previously led Lorient to an impressive campaign, Nice deployed a dynamic 3-4-3 formation.
The young defender Junior Mandza, just 17 years old, earned his first start in Ligue 1, while Everton Pereira was chosen over Issiaga Camara in midfield. The attacking trio featured Sofiane Diop, Zoumana Diallo, and Gauthier Hein, with captain Jonathan Clauss marshalling the backline.
Early momentum, wasted chances
Lorient began the stronger of the two, with Théo Le Bris testing Yehvann Diouf early. However, Nice quickly responded, as Diop saw his effort saved by Lorient’s goalkeeper after a defensive slip. Hein and Clauss also forced saves before halftime, while Makengo narrowly missed the target after a defensive error.
« We were nervous but that’s our style. We create chances—we just need to finish them properly, » reflected midfielder Antoine Mendy.
A second half of missed opportunities
The pace dropped in the second period, with neither side able to break the deadlock. Noah Cadiou and Mamadou Koné both saw efforts saved by Diouf, while substitute Nathan Ngoumou failed to convert a late header. The final scare came in stoppage time when Tosin headed just over the bar, leaving the score unchanged.
Forward Sofiane Diop admitted room for improvement: « We must avoid giving opponents easy chances every match. »
Nice now face a tricky away trip to Paris FC next Sunday at 15:00, looking to end a six-season winless streak on opening day.
