Médecins sans frontières issues urgent plea to global fund for continued north kivu malaria support

RDC: MSF appelle le Fonds mondial à maintenir le Nord-Kivu dans ses priorités concernant le paludisme

Médecins sans frontières (MSF) expresses profound concern over potential future funding reductions, warning that such cuts could further deteriorate the already fragile health situation in North Kivu, a region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. For several years, North Kivu has been grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis and persistent supply chain challenges, significantly undermining its healthcare infrastructure.

Stéphane Doyon, program manager for MSF France, elaborated on the organization’s apprehension regarding this critical issue.

“Our worry stems from the fact that if North Kivu is removed from the Global Fund’s project scope, the majority of treatments currently supplied to health centers—those not provided by Médecins sans frontières but originating from the Global Fund—would cease to arrive. At Médecins sans frontières, we simply cannot substitute for the Global Fund across an entire province. This would lead to an extremely critical situation,” Doyon explained.

Doyon further emphasized the urgency of the situation: “Malaria remains the leading cause of consultations observed in our health centers. Our absolute priority is to ensure the reintegration of malaria support for this profoundly affected North Kivu province, which currently stands as one of the most critical health zones. We are witnessing ongoing measles and cholera epidemics in North Kivu. The population, deeply scarred by conflict, is in desperate need of external assistance.”
