Mali crisis: government delegation visits Bandiagara after deadly attack

The Malian government dispatched a high-level delegation, led by Ismaël Wagué, Minister of State for Reconciliation, Peace, and National Cohesion, to Bandiagara in central Mali on Monday, May 11, 2026. This visit followed a devastating terrorist assault on Kori-Kori and Gomossogou villages in the Bankass district on May 6.

The delegation formally conveyed the government’s condolences during a ceremony at the regional governor’s office. As part of the support package, they distributed 25 tons of millet, 25 tons of rice, and a financial aid of 20 million FCFA to affected families.

During the visit, Ismaël Wagué attributed the attack to fighters from the JNIM group. While no official death toll has been released, local sources, including the Dozos of Dana Ambassagou, reported over 60 fatalities alongside numerous injuries and severe property damage.

Youssouf Toloba, leader of the Dozos, stated that the villages were targeted after refusing to sign so-called “peace agreements” with armed groups. Meanwhile, Noël Tessougué, the group’s deputy chief, warned that the Dozos would no longer tolerate villages that collaborate with JNIM fighters.

In his closing remarks, Ismaël Wagué reaffirmed the transitional government’s commitment to ending violence against civilians across the country. He urged Malians to unite, stand in solidarity, and prioritize national cohesion to overcome current security challenges.
