Mali army reclaims ground from armed groups in latest operations

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a shift in momentum, asserting full operational control across key conflict zones targeted by both the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (Azawad Liberation Front/FLNA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in central and southern regions.

In a statement released following sustained military engagement, the FAMA detailed renewed combat operations on Sunday near Anifif, approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The area had witnessed a surge in militant activity following the arrival of additional personnel and matériel dispatched to reinforce the FLNA’s position in the region.

The armed forces emphasized the disciplined resolve of their troops, stating, « In the face of escalating pressure, Malian defense units maintained relentless operational tempo throughout the day, executing missions with unwavering precision and valor. » The communiqué reaffirmed absolute confidence in the FAMA’s capacity to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilian populations, and dismantle hostile forces threatening Mali’s territorial integrity.

FLNA leadership disputes claims of losses

Reacting to reports from military sources, the FLNA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, countered assertions regarding the status of their operations in Anifif. He dismissed claims of leadership losses, specifically denying the death of FLNA commander Mbarek Ag Akli, and insisted that command structures remained fully operational, with Akli continuing to oversee field operations in northern Mali.
