The Correctional Court of Dakar has deferred its verdict in the case involving the alleged forgery of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s signature, where Khardiata Tandian stands accused. The decision, initially scheduled for July 9, 2026, was postponed due to the absence of Cherif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as the alleged accomplice of the defendant.
The court also rejected Tandian’s request for provisional release. Her legal team argued that she meets all criteria for such a measure, emphasizing her prolonged pre-trial detention exceeding a year, her status as a married woman and mother, and the possibility that her time already served could cover potential penalties. They warned that further incarceration would severely disrupt her social standing. Despite these pleas, the prosecution strongly contested the release, asserting that Tandian’s freedom would pose a public order threat and that she lacks sufficient guarantees to ensure her court appearances.
The defense countered that there was no risk of witness tampering, as the accused had already been questioned in court. However, the tribunal sided with the prosecution’s stance, leaving Tandian in detention until the case reaches its conclusion.
