Inter Milan secures Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur in €35m deal

The Italian giants have completed the permanent transfer of the versatile English defender, filling the void left by Denzel Dumfries’ move to Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Under the terms of the agreement, Tottenham will receive an initial €31.5 million fee, with an additional €3.5 million tied to future performance milestones. The 26-year-old defender has inked a long-term contract at San Siro, running through June 2031, and will earn €2.5 million annually along with performance-based bonuses.

Spence arrives at Inter Milan with a proven track record in European football, having previously made a strong impression during a six-month loan spell at Genoa in 2024. His adaptability—capable of excelling as either a right or left wing-back—aligns perfectly with Cristian Chivu’s tactical demands.

The defender’s reputation received a global boost following his standout performances at the 2026 World Cup, where he featured in all eight of England’s matches across the tournament in North America. His contributions were particularly notable in the knockout stages, including a starting role in the semi-final against Argentina and the victory over France in the third-place playoff.

End of an era at Tottenham Hotspur

Spence departs Tottenham after making 85 appearances for the club since joining from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for an initial £19 million fee. His exit is part of a broader defensive reshuffle at the London club, following the arrival of experienced left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer, who is expected to bring leadership and depth to the Spurs’ backline.

England’s defensive reinforcements in Serie A

Spence’s signing marks the second major English defensive acquisition for Inter this summer, following the free transfer arrival of John Stones from Manchester City. The Nerazzurri are now focused on preparing for their Serie A opener, a home fixture against Monza scheduled for August 22.
