Diomaye President coalition slams Ousmane Sonko’s remarks on state institutions

In a sharp rebuke, the Diomaye President coalition has strongly criticized recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during an event in Mbacké. The coalition condemned his remarks as disrespectful and damaging to the integrity of state institutions, emphasizing the need for responsible leadership.

Bassirou Dieng, a prominent figure in the coalition, stressed that such comments violate the fundamental principles of a democratic state governed by the rule of law. Speaking to local media, he argued that constitutional leaders must uphold dignity and mutual respect. « In any democracy, no institutional leader—not even the president of the National Assembly—should stoop to making inflammatory or insulting remarks against the head of state, » Dieng stated.

The coalition’s response comes amid widespread backlash on social media and in public discourse. Dieng noted that Sonko’s statements have sparked widespread outrage, with citizens and analysts alike condemning what they see as reckless and irresponsible rhetoric. He called on Sonko to exercise restraint and reconsider his approach to public discourse.

Looking ahead, the Diomaye President coalition has signaled a shift in its response strategy, vowing to take a firmer stance against repeated attacks on state institutions. « We will no longer tolerate disrespect toward the presidency or the institutions that represent the Republic, » Dieng declared. The coalition’s stance underscores the growing tensions between political factions in the country’s evolving democratic landscape.
