Charting PASTEF’s future: Ousmane Sonko’s vision for the party’s first congress

With the first ordinary congress of the Parti des Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité (PASTEF) scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2026, Secretary General Ousmane Sonko has issued a comprehensive statement. This significant publication delves into the movement’s foundational journey and articulates the ambitious goals set for this pivotal gathering.

In his written address, the former Prime Minister adopts a dual perspective: that of a founder recounting the party’s humble beginnings in 2014, established “without financial means” or “influential connections,” and that of a strategist contemplating the crucial period post-electoral victory. He underscores a vital lesson from history, stating, “History teaches that political ruptures can be absorbed if they lack a clear doctrine, a robust organizational structure, and a long-term strategy.”

Sonko’s tribune traces a compelling narrative arc, moving from the intense popular mobilizations of 2021-2024, which he describes as “one of the most intense periods in Senegal’s recent history,” towards the June 2026 congress. He envisions this event as marking the critical transition “from a movement of rupture to a fully organized party.” Delegates from national sections and the diaspora will convene to adopt a foundational ideological charter, a strategic orientation document, specific party theses, and a general resolution.

A guiding principle throughout the text, the concept of sovereignty is defined by Sonko not merely as a slogan, but as “a method of government.” This encompasses critical areas such as natural resource management, budgetary decisions, agricultural policy, the educational system, and Senegal’s standing on the global stage. He further integrates a cultural dimension, advocating for the valorization of national languages, the reappropriation of history, mastery of technology, and a strong panafrican ambition: to integrate national sovereignty with continental economic and scientific collaboration, reinforcing West Africa Sahel development.

Published amidst current executive tensions and his own removal from government, Sonko’s tribune also serves as a clear signal: the founder of PASTEF intends to exert significant influence over the party’s ideological direction, irrespective of institutional fluctuations and the ongoing dynamics of Senegal politics.
