France has announced that it will withdraw all of its diplomats from Burkina Faso amid growing tensions between the two countries.
The move comes after Burkina Faso broke off diplomatic relations with France last week, citing French ‘activism’ against its interests.
The French government has expressed regret over the decision and said it will take the necessary steps to protect French citizens in the country.
More than 2,000 French citizens are registered with the French consulate in Burkina Faso, while over 6,000 Burkinabé live in France.
Background
Burkina Faso has been plagued by insecurity and instability since a military coup in 2022. The new government, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has taken a hardline stance against Western powers, including France.
The French government had previously maintained a significant presence in the country, but it appears that this will be scaled back amid the current tensions.
