Benin to lead African Union peace council in september 2026

The Bénin is set to mark a significant milestone in its continental diplomacy this September. For the entire month of September 2026, the West African nation will assume the rotating presidency of the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). Final preparations for this pivotal role were solidified during high-level talks in Addis Ababa, where the Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Corinne Amori Brunet, met with the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on the sidelines of the 49th session of the AU Executive Council.

Steering continental stability for two years

This month-long presidency is part of a broader two-year mandate (2026–2028) secured by Bénin on February 11 when it was elected as one of 15 members of the PSC. Just seven months into its tenure, Cotonou is now at the helm of the continent’s premier crisis prevention and management body, tasked with overseeing peace and security across Africa.

While the rotating presidency does not grant unilateral decision-making power, it elevates the host country to a central position in continental diplomacy. During its term, Bénin will play a pivotal role in shaping the agenda and priorities of the PSC.

Key responsibilities during the presidency

• Agenda-setting: The country will determine the monthly agenda, selecting pressing issues for discussion and debate.
• Highlighting urgent crises: Bénin will guide discussions on major hotspots, from the escalating Sahel instability to the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the persistent volatility in the Horn of Africa.
• Institutional coordination: The nation will facilitate dialogue between the PSC and other AU bodies, including the Panel of the Wise and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
