The Algerian Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, landed in Niamey on Wednesday for an official visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Niger. The visit, carried out at the request of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores the shared determination of both nations to expand their collaboration across key sectors.
Accompanying the Prime Minister were Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, along with the Director-General of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, highlighting the visit’s strategic focus on energy and infrastructure.
The initial discussions between the two Prime Ministers centered on assessing the current state of bilateral relations and identifying opportunities to broaden cooperation in mutually beneficial areas. The talks also explored ways to accelerate joint development projects and strengthen existing partnerships between Algiers and Niamey.
A highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of a 40-megawatt power plant in the Gorou Banda district of Niamey. Funded by Algeria as part of a bilateral cooperation agreement, this project reflects Algiers’ commitment to supporting Niger’s energy infrastructure development.
The new facility is expected to significantly boost Niger’s electricity production capacity while improving energy access for multiple neighborhoods in the capital. It also serves as a tangible demonstration of Algeria’s dedication to fostering stability and progress in the Sahel-Saharan region.
In addition to project inaugurations, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a meeting with Niger’s President. This session will focus on evaluating future cooperation prospects and addressing regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The visit arrives at a pivotal moment, as political and economic exchanges between Algeria and Niger have intensified in recent months. Both nations are actively pursuing stronger ties to better serve the interests of their respective populations.
