Tensions eased in Laayoune as key figures from the “Sahraouis pour la paix” movement convened with the U.S. political envoy at the residence of Mohamed Lemine Nafa, a prominent member of the organization’s permanent political commission. The meeting, initiated by the U.S. diplomatic mission, brought together several leaders and cadres of the movement.

During the session, representatives of Sahraouis pour la paix outlined their organizational milestones over the past six years, emphasizing their vision for conflict resolution. They also addressed inquiries from the American delegation regarding the current state of the Western Sahara dossier.

The movement’s leaders underscored the urgency of integrating “Sahraouis pour la paix” into the UN-sponsored negotiation process, asserting that it represents a legitimate forum uniting Sahrawi voices advocating for a political and peaceful outcome. They stressed the need for inclusive participation in any negotiation aimed at achieving a sustainable resolution.

The American envoy highlighted Washington’s strong commitment to ending the prolonged stalemate in the conflict. He reiterated U.S. opposition to perpetuating the status quo and renewed support for initiatives aimed at revitalizing the political process toward a definitive solution.

The U.S. diplomat praised the efforts of “Sahraouis pour la paix,” describing the movement as an active and committed Sahrawi voice in pursuit of negotiated solutions. He affirmed that the United States places significant importance on supporting Sahrawi voices advocating for agreements that ensure regional stability and security. The diplomat emphasized the role of such voices in unlocking diplomatic pathways and overcoming the confrontational dynamics that have hindered solutions in recent years.

This meeting follows Washington’s ongoing engagement with Sahraouis pour la paix, including a recent delegation visit to New York where the movement’s representatives met with U.S., French, and British permanent ambassadors to the United Nations.

The discussions took place ahead of a critical United Nations Security Council session dedicated to reviewing the implementation of Resolution 2797. This resolution has garnered broad international consensus in favor of advancing a political and peaceful solution to the Western Sahara question.
