Toulouse FC climbs to 9th place after Nantes match abandonment

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has definitively closed the case of the abandoned match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC (0-0) from the 34th and final matchday of Ligue 1. The result stands, lifting Toulouse to their highest-ever league position since new ownership arrived.

The LFP’s decision, announced late on May 27, confirms the score that stood at the 22nd minute when the match was halted due to pitch invasions. While expectations leaned toward a 3-0 forfeit win for Nantes, the ruling preserves the goalless draw, allowing Toulouse to secure a historic 9th-place finish.

Toulouse now sits on 45 points—tied with Lorient but ahead on goal difference (3 vs. -1). This milestone surpasses their previous best since the RedBird capital investment and continues their steady upward trajectory in Ligue 1.

LFP’s ruling and sanctions: In a concise statement, the LFP cited the report of the investigating committee, concluding: “After reviewing the investigation report, the Commission definitively validates the score recorded on the pitch at the time of the definitive abandonment of the match (0-0).”

Sanctions imposed on FC Nantes

The match was abandoned after supporters launched flares onto the pitch and dozens of masked ultras stormed the field in protest against the club’s relegation. The LFP responded with administrative penalties: a closed-door match behind closed doors at the Stade de la Beaujoire and a two-match closure of the Loire stand, from which the disruptions originated.

FC Nantes will begin their Ligue 2 campaign without fan support in the affected section, though they avoided harsher sporting sanctions such as point deductions—a relief amid the turbulent season’s end.
