Togo higher education receives new leadership at university of datcha

The University of Datcha in Togo has entered a new phase with the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as its inaugural president. This landmark decision, formalized during the recent Council of Ministers session, marks a strategic move to establish the country’s third public university as a center of academic excellence in the Plateaux Region.

Leading with academic expertise

Professor Batchana brings extensive experience to his new role, having previously served as Director of Academic Affairs and Enrollment at the University of Lomé. A distinguished historian specializing in political history and international relations, he has been entrusted with shaping the foundation of this emerging institution. His deep understanding of higher education administration positions him well to guide the university through its formative years.

Supporting his vision is Professor Kperkouma Walla, renowned botanist and plant ecology expert, who has been named the university’s first vice president. Together, they form a leadership duo poised to build a robust administrative, scientific, and pedagogical framework for the University of Datcha.

Addressing critical education challenges in Togo

The University of Datcha was officially established in September 2023 as a response to pressing needs within Togo’s higher education sector. Its creation addresses two fundamental goals:

• Easing academic pressure: The university aims to reduce congestion at existing public universities in Lomé and Kara by offering additional capacity for students.
• Boosting regional development: By aligning its academic programs with the economic, social, and cultural needs of the Plateaux Region, the institution seeks to foster local growth and opportunity.
