Tchad independence day: leader urges unity ahead of 2026 celebrations

As the 66th anniversary of Chad’s independence approaches on August 11, 2026, Pahimi Padacké Albert, leader of the Rassemblement national des démocrates tchadiens (RNDT-Le Réveil) and prominent opposition figure, has issued a heartfelt plea for unity, calm, and reconciliation across the nation.

During an address marking the upcoming national holiday, the former Prime Minister addressed the people of Chad with a tone of humility, solemnity, and duty. He highlighted the weight of the moment, noting that the celebration unfolds amid a backdrop of simmering political tensions and deep-seated frustrations.

« This year, we mark our freedom in a climate of quiet but heavy political tension, where frustrations fester from a sense of multidimensional exclusion, » he stated, underscoring the urgency of addressing these underlying grievances.

The opposition leader called for greater dialogue and inclusivity, reinforcing his message with conviction. « Today, I once again, with full responsibility, call for unity, calm, openness, and the healing of divisions, » he emphasized.

In his remarks, Pahimi Padacké Albert turned directly to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, urging decisive action to strengthen national cohesion. He emphasized the need for bold steps to bridge divides and bring the nation together as one family.

« On the eve of this celebration, I solemnly call on all Chadians—and first and foremost, the President of the Republic, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno—to take decisive measures that will overcome feelings of exclusion and unite our people in the spirit of the Chadian family. Let the constitutional tools at the Head of State’s disposal be used to restore freedom to political figures unjustly held in detention. Let true political openness, rooted in sincere, fraternal, and patriotic dialogue, pave the way for this moment of reconciliation—respecting the nation’s rich political, cultural, and religious diversity, » he declared.
